Position Summary:
|
Responsible for providing quality diagnostic and therapeutic care to individuals who have or are suspected of having communication, swallowing, or cognitive disorders. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups.

Accountability:
|
PATIENT CARE - Diagnose, evaluate, educate and provide treatment to individuals who have or are suspected of having dysphagia
PATIENT CARE - Evaluate and treat patients with cognative-communicative disorders resulting from traumatic and non-trumatic brain injury
PATIENT CARE - Evaluate and treat patients with speech and language disorders
PATIENT CARE - Evaluate and treat patients with tracheostomy tubes and augmentation communication devices
PATIENT CARE - Evaluate and treat patients with pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders
PATIENT CARE - Evaluate and treat ENT patients
SUPERVISION - Supervise graduate students, clinical fellows, and/or paraprofessionals as delegated
EDUCATION - Provide education and training to hospital personnel as well as outside and rural communities as requested
CONSULTATION - Consult with medical staff on patient care
DOCUMENTATION - Document all patient care activities; maintain all appropriate records
QUALITY - Cooperate with data collection efforts related to the monitoring of quality records
CUSTOMER/STAFF RELATIONS - Establish and maintain good rapport and effective working relationships with patients, visitors, physicians and Hospital employees
DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops
PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols
PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes
PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk
PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner
PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"

Education Requirements:
|
Master's Degree in related discipline
|
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
|
License to practice as a Speech Language Pathologist in State of New Mexico or obtain within 30 days of position
Certificate of Clinical Competence through American Speech Language Hearing Assoc or Clinical Fellowships will be considered
CPR Certification for Healthcare/BLS Providers or for Professional Rescuers or must obtain within 30 calendar days of date of position

Experience Requirements - Preferred:
|
1 yr rehabilitation interdisciplinary team experience
1 yr experience with brain injury patients
Bilingual English/Spanish
Bilingual English/American Sign Language
Bilingual English/Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, Towa, Zuni, or Navajo
1 year directly related experience
|
Physical Demands Requirements:
|
Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects or people. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
|
Testing Requirements:
|
Tuberculin Skin Test required annually
|
Working Conditions Requirements:
|
May be credentialed by UNMH Credentialing Committee
Med Haz: Mod exposure to chemicals, dangerous equipment and/or materials requiring basic safety precautions
