Position Summary:

The UNM Health System Eye Care team is committed to providing excellent clinical care with the best patient experience possible. We are looking for a motivated Optometrist who is interested in joining our team to help care for patients in our local and state wide community.

The clinics are located near and in UNM Hospital with services offered in a wide range of ocular diseases and medical eye care that includes various specialties. Working together with other primary, specialty, and surgical care teams, our medically-based collaborative practice focuses on providing patient-centered, community-service based quality and compassionate care for all New Mexicans. Our providers are well respected and work with collegial support and readily available resources.

Provide primary eye care involving diagnosis, treatment and management of patients with a wide spectrum of ocular conditions and visual disorders utlilizing the full range of available diagnostic testing. Prescribe glasses, contact lenses, topical medication, oral medication and/or other therapies as appropriate. Refer for subspecialty care as clinically relevant. Other duties may include low vision management, specialty contact lense management, and tele-retinal image grading using remote telemedicine program. Ensure adherence to Hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include infant through geriatric age groups.
  • EYE EXAMS - Perform problem focussed and comprehensive eye exams including visual acuity, refraction/retinoscopy, ocular motility, pupillary function and neurological aspects of the visual system. Examination of ocular health and appearace using slit lamp, tonometry, gonioscopy, binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy and fundus lenses. Interpret diagnostic testing such as automated perimetry, ocular coherence tomography, anterior and posterior segment photography, B-Scan ultrasonography, corneal topography and pachymetry. Integrate both ocular and systemic apsect of eye care in diagnosis, treatment and management of patients with various ocular conditions. Order laboratory testing and imaging when indicated. Communicate and coordinate care with other health care providers as appropriate.

  • PROCEDURES - Procedures include but are not limited to insertion and removal of punctual plugs, dilation and irrigation of punctal, removal of superficial corneal or conjunctival foreign bodies, corneal debridement, culture of ocular infections, bandage contact lenses, and removal of eyelashes.

  • OTHER SERVICES - Contact lens fitting and dispensing including specialty lens designs as appropriate. Low vision management or referral as appropriate. Utilize a picture archiving communication system (PACS) to screen for retinopathy and other ocular conditions as appropriate.

  • DOCUMENTATION - Provide accurate documentation of patient care, document orders, directives, procedures and patient responses in the medical record and communicate them to other members of the health care team; maintain accurate, legible and confidential records

  • PATIENT EDUCATION - Provide education for patients and/or families about preventive care, medical issues and the use of prescriptive medical treatment

  • PATIENT CARE - Work as a team member with medical/nursing/counseling staff to provide comprehensive care and promote continuity of care

  • RELATED WORK - Perform related duties and responsibilities as required

  • DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops

  • PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes

  • PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"

  • Education Requirements:
  • Optometry accredited school graduate

  • Experience Requirements:
  • Residency in ocular disease, hospital based optometry or equivalent experience

  • Licensure/Certification Requirements:
  • Licensed to practice Optometry in State of New Mexico

  • CPR Certification for Healthcare/BLS Providers or for Professional Rescuers or must obtain within 30 calendar days of date of position

  • Education Requirements - Preferred:
  • Optometry residency of 1 year completed

  • Experience Requirements - Preferred:
  • Skills in low vision management, specialty contact lenses or pediatrics are beneficial

  • Physical Demands Requirements:
  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. May require walking or standing to a significant degree or requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or may require working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of materials is negligible.
